Why do you need to protect your computer with a firewall? Does a firewall really help? A firewall is a program or hardware that provides your computer protection from anonymous hackers, worms, and viruses that try to invade your computer through the Internet. It is a barrier that protects your computer. The firewall scans the things that go through your Internet access point to filter your computer from anomalies based on how you customized the settings.

A firewall’s task is tantamount to an actual, physical firewall which keeps fire from spreading to other areas or even your home.

When using your computer at home, or you have a network of computers, or you are using your computer for business, it is essentially important to turn on your firewall. The firewall has two variations. One is hardware and the other is a software program. The hardware firewall is a piece of electronic device which is usually used by businesses handling large networks. Computers used at home usually use the software firewall.

The firewall is needed especially if you have a DSL service or a cable modem for Internet connection. But, having your firewall turned on does not mean you are completely and fully protected from hackers, worms, and viruses. The firewall will not always block virus in emails or malwares from attacking and infiltrating your computer. You also need to have updated antivirus software installed in your computer to double the security and increase the protection.

Firewalls use different combinations of the three ways to control the inflow and outflow of traffic in the network:

Packet filtering refers to the analysis of small chunks of data. The firewall scrutinizes the header information which holds the source, destination IP addresses, and the ports. Packets or small bits of data that pass through the filters are sent to the requesting system while all the other data are rejected.

Proxy service. In the proxy service, the information or data from the Internet is reclaimed by the firewall and launched to the requesting system and from the requesting system to the firewall.

Make sure that your computer runs with a firewall. If you can, you should also try using an all-in-one security suite such as an antivirus firewall software program that works both as virus protection and firewall.

Safety and security are the two things which everyone will be looking for. Whether it may be belongings are personal data in the PC, we are in need of a safety system. Biometrics provides extreme security. It is a branch of information technology which is used to measure and analyze the identification of a person. Authentication is important to safeguard our belongings. Face recognition uses series of image or an image obtained from the camera to recognize the person. It works from a long distance and monitor the persons without their knowledge while most of the biometric systems needs the persons to come directly and close to them to recognize their identification.

There are number of players available in the market which creates the logon security for the networks and Pc. The best of the player is found to be the Identix technologies which is integrated into window 2000 active directories and provides quick verification process. And next best player is found to be the digital persona UareU, provides adequate support and solution, but less when compared to the Identix player. The biometrics locks could be effective to protect our secret information and belongings. Also you can identify the person who had tried to unlock the lock in our absence. The latest advancement in the technology is the evolution of fingerprint locks. With the help of the irises, vein patterns, hand prints and finger prints are used to lock your belongings. The biometrics can be very effective in protecting not only the data but also the precious things present in our home. A biometric lock can be used to lock the doors of the house and only the person who has stored his finger print can unlock it again.

If you’ve only heard about cable-modems recently, then here are facts that you should know about these devices. Cable-modems are devices that connect a cable connection to a computer for the purpose of delivering high-speed internet access service. Information from the internet passes through the cable wire gets transformed by a cable-modem, and then moves on to a computer. To get into more detail, a cable connection is made up of a coaxial cable. A coax cable, for short, has the ability to transports a large amount of data. thus, it can be used to transport not only cable television but internet data as well. The role of the cable modem is to distinguish between the cable signal and the internet signal. It then takes the internet signal and transforms it to a digital signal. a computer only understands digital signals.

Cable modems are available online, in computer stores, or you can purchase one from your cable provider. If you read the classified ads, you might notice there are used cable modems for sale too – not recommended though. A cable modem is a fairly affordable device. You won’t have to shell out a lot of money to get one. But if you want to scout around for a good deal then think about going online to research on prices. If you’re concerned about the quality of a cable modem, you can read product reviews online. Product reviews are usually paid reviews, however. a more reliable source to get an idea of quality is to read reviews from consumer magazines. Forums are also a good source of information. Now that you know about cable modems, then it’s probably time you go ahead and purchase one.

Portable music players are all the rage, everyone either has one or wants one. With all that, technology floating around there had to be a place to get the music for them. Enter the music mp3 download, one click of the mouse will show you multiple thousands of sites that offer just that. A music mp3 download is a standard music file that has been compressed and can be downloaded from the internet into an mp3 player. The difference between these files and a typical music file is the size; technology has made it possible to shrink the size of the file without losing any information. Translation? Music mp3 downloads are smaller but sound exactly the same as the original.

Typically, you can find many good deals on the internet for mp3 downloads. Often times a single song will be as low as eighty-nine cents plus no shipping! Simply put in your bank information and you are set. Sites like these may have entire albums for as little as $5 or combinations from the same group or artist. When looking for a reliable site for your music mp3 download you will find there are many to choose from. Amazon has a music download section as do many of the official sites of your favorite group or artist. The site may have access to the music downloads or a link to a reliable site where you can get them.

Once you have browsed around for a while, you will see many offers free mp3 downloads. Many of these will be good sites with a legitimate product however; you may want to use a pre-loaded card with limited funds if you are asked for a credit card. Often sites like these will get your information under the pretense of assuring you are at least 18, others are just getting your card information to defraud you. A variation on free music mp3 downloads are the sites that offer them for your phone. All they ask is for your phone number so they can send you the “free” music. Be careful in the fine print you could be agreeing to a monthly membership that will be added to your phone bill!

A good way to avoid the problems with unscrupulous web site owners is to purchase your music mp3 download at a local retailer. They have selections from many artists or you can buy a prepaid card that you use online. Either way you are protecting your bank account while still enjoying your mp3 player. Music mp3 downloads are definitely here to stay and with a little research and proper amount of caution you will have nothing to worry about.

When using and operating a high availability server or system within an organisation, you need to consider that there may be times when hardware fails and the system may be offline. This is par for the course when it comes to computers. No system in 100% fail safe as there are so many things that can go wrong. One of the main issues that IT departments face is loss of data if a disk fails. A way to overcome this issue is to employ a level of RAID and use SCSI hot swap disks.

Using RAID allows you to spread your data across many disk drives in the server. This process has several levels of complexity and redundancy and allows you to recover information from a failed disk using parity information, written to different disks. A little like an algebra sum, where 1 + a = 3 (a = 2), RAID allows the data to be recreated when the faulty hard disk is replaced. The server still operates, but it has to work out the sums on its own, making it slightly slower.

In the past, it was a requirement that the server hardware was powered off to replace the hard disk, but hot swap drives and caddies have allowed the server to continue to operate whilst the data is recovered. SCSI hot swap drives allow you to remove the faulty hard disk and insert a new one without having to power off any part of the server. This allows the server to continue running whilst the new disks is restored or repaired and made part of the RAID array. Each major manufacturer of server hardware has a slightly different implementation of the hot swap technology. The SCSI hard disk sits in a caddy or tray which is specific to each server brand. The SCSI disk itself is sometimes independent to the server brand, and therefore any similar size SCSI disk can be used.

Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distributions for desktops. New versions are released about every six months. This program is easy to install and use. The ample support comes from both technical professionals as well as end users. Ubuntu is a great program for beginners. Mandriva originally appeared to be a restructured version of Red Hat Linux. The current software has added user-friendly features including better hardware detection and intuitive disk partitioning. Mandriva also utilizes a KDE desktop and has great support which makes it a good program for beginners.

PCLinuxOS is great for new Linux users due to its intuitive graphical installer. It provides users with current desktop software and fast boot times. This program received our lowest rating for support because it does not provide support in any language other than English. Additionally, the program is only available in a 32-bit version and new releases are not scheduled regularly. Gentoo was designed for power users, allowing them to have ultimate customization capabilities. It also has exceptional security. One of its best features is the ability to keep the system current without re-installing the software. However, long compilation times and occasionally instability makes it less of a crowd pleaser than other available software.

OpenSUSE has an extensive and intuitive configuration tool. The program also includes user-friendly desktop environments (GNOME and KDE). The program gets high marks for help and support. However, its heavy use of resources for desktop setup and graphical utilities tend to slow the program down. Debian GNU/Linux supports more infrastructures than any other Linux distribution program and contains more than 20,000 software packages. It has become the largest Linux distribution ever created and has inspired over 120 Debian-based distributions. The program has a reputation for stability and being the most bug-free Linux distribution system on the market. However, their intensive testing has led to lengthy intervals between releases, typically 1-3 years.

FreeBSD was introduced into the market in 1993. The program is not in the same league as the other programs listed. However, it is fast, stable and has over 15,000 software applications available. FreeBSD lacks a graphical installer and the convenient features of hardware detection and system configuration which must be performed manually by the user. Ultimately, you must choose the program that is right for you. Ubuntu and PCLinusOS enable beginners to use Linux without requiring a steep learning curve to produce results. Gentoo and FreeBSD are definitely for more advanced users. Mandriva, Debian GNU/Linux, and openSUSE are the best programs if you are willing to trade some advanced features for stability and continuing support.

Mobile computing refers to the use of small and portable computing devices in wireless enabled networks that provide wireless connections to a central main server. These devices include laptops, notebook PCs, tablet PCs, palmtops, personal digital assistant (PDAs) and other hand held devices. A radio-signaling device is installed inside these devices for receiving and transmitting electronic data. Wireless networks use Wi-Fi(wireless fidelity) technology for providing network coverage to offices, public places, and other small workplaces. A wireless access point device is used to provide wire free network coverage in the designated area. An access point device that is built on 802.11b and 802.11g IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standards transmits data at 2.4 GHz whereas devices that comply with 802.11a standards transmit at 5 GHz.

WiMax (Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology represents the next generation of wireless networking and can transmit data up to a distance of forty-eight km. It can provide a maximum networking speed of seventy Mbps. It provides much better facilities than Wi-Fi such as higher bandwidth and high data security by using enhanced encryption schemes. It can provide service in both Line Of Sight (LOS) and Non-Line Of Sight (NLOS) locations, but range may vary accordingly. WiMax supports several communication protocols, and can act as the backbone network for an ISP(Internet service provider) as well as telecom service provider.

Mobile computing devices can use any of these networks to access the Internet or connect to a LAN( local area network) or WAN(wide area network) server. They use networking software for adjusting device settings to suit specific network requirements. Mobile computing has enabled users to remain connected while on the move. High end users can opt for satellite based networking which provides wireless connectivity anywhere in the world. However, this technology is costly and will take many years to become as affordable as Wi-Fi and WiMax.

Backing up valuable information is a very important part of running a business or a group successfully. As more time passes, it is becoming smarter to save records of all the transactions and paperwork which go through the system in order to have protection against any discrepancies which may arise in the future. The question remains, which is the best way to save these records.

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to the best preservation methods. Most people are more familiar with the use of disc space to record and store all of their records. What many people don’t realize, however, is that the use of magnetic tape outweighs disc space by far.

Magnetic tape costs nearly 25 times less to record the same amount of information as it would cost on hard disc space. It also has the ability to last for over 30 years, making its shelf life incredibly valuable. The only issue comes in the form of the fact that most computer systems normally do not come with magnetic tape decks.

This means that if someone wanted to use magnetic tape to backup all of their documents, they would need to install a tape drive into their system. Thankfully, an external tape drive is available, making the use of one of these systems incredibly easy for any user.

By installing an external tape drive, one simply needs to hook the unit up to the computer and run some software to make the unit compatible.

Sticking a blank magnetic tape into the external tape drive makes it then available for the unit to record and store the data necessary, with only a minimal amount of work on the part of the computer user. These external tape drives can be a lifesaver when it comes to the storage of all of the important data.

External tape drives will often end up saving the company a great deal of money as well, when compared to saving the equivalent amount of data on discs. The cheapest of these drives can be found for a little over $100, while some of the more quality, top-end brands can go all the way up to $900.

Whichever external tape drive is purchased, however, the company will quickly begin to save money. The tapes which are required to store the information are much cheaper and will hold much more than the disc space that could be required. In this manner, it will not take long for the company to make up the difference they would have been spending on all of the disc space and begin to save money, therefore killing two birds with one stone, with the external tape drives!

Pinnaclemicro.com, based in Santa Ana, California has been selling new and refurbished computer, telecom and medical products. Additionally, they repair tape drives, optical drives and printers. Their customers range from computer resellers to self maintainers to corporations to governmental and educational institutions.
